Pig Farm to Fund School Supplies for Dropout Students
📅 April 2025 | 📍 EP Umurava, Rubira Cell Category: Education
At EP Umurava, 52 children had dropped out of school. The reason for most of them was the same — their families could not afford basic school materials.
Ejo Youth Dignity Foundation decided to tackle the problem at its root.
In 2025, EYDF constructed a modern pig farm with five rooms at EP Umurava — built in full accordance with farming regulations. The farm was designed as a sustainable income-generating solution, with profits from pig sales directed toward school supplies for the most vulnerable students.
The idea is practical and smart. The school already provides children with a midday meal, meaning food scraps that would otherwise go to waste are used to feed the pigs — keeping costs low and impact high. A well-managed sow can produce up to 10 piglets per pregnancy and birth twice a year, creating a reliable stream of income for the school.
This year, all supported students sat their exams and achieved an average score of 69.8% — a result that shows what children can accomplish when the barriers in front of them are removed. The target for next year is 75%.
When a child has a pen and a notebook, they show up. When they show up, they learn.
