No More 5km Walks: Clean Water Comes to Rubira Cell
📅 March 2025 | 📍 Rubira Cell, Kabeza Village, Kayonza District Category: Clean Water
For years, families in Rubira Cell walked up to 5 kilometres every morning to collect clean water — a journey that left children exhausted before school even began and kept girls away from morning lessons.
That changed in March 2025.
In partnership with Kayonza District and WASAC, Ejo Youth Dignity Foundation built a public water station in Kabeza Village — complete with large storage tanks and a clean piped water supply. The station is now managed by Madame Vestine Mukankundiye, a local woman who signed a formal agreement to operate the kiosk, giving her a reliable source of income while serving her community.
At EP Umurava, the impact was immediate. The school kitchen — which feeds 938 students every day — finally has a reliable water supply. A new dishwashing station was also built, ensuring proper hygiene for every student at every meal.
For the elderly who had no one to collect water for them, the new tap is life-changing.
“We are very happy. Even the old people who have no one to help them can now come here easily,” said one resident.
Water is a human right. Now, for the people of Rubira Cell, it is also a reality.
